Our Lady of Lourdes

Situated in the foothills of the French Pyrenees is the serene and beautiful town of Lourdes, where the Blessed Virgin chose to reveal herself to the poorest of peasant girls, Bernadette Soubirous, saying,

“I am the Immaculate Conception”

Saint Bernadette was born in Lourdes on the 7th January 1844. She was a sickly child, unable to go to school regularly and, at the age of fourteen, having failed to learn her Catechism, was still to take her first Holy Communion. Yet it was to her that Our Lady chose to appear.

Bernadette, with her younger sister and another girl, went to collect firewood from the banks of the River Gave.

There, as Bernadette herself was to tell,

“… I looked up at the Grotto, I saw a lady dressed in white.

She was wearing a white dress with a blue sash and a yellow rose on each foot.”

Our Lady appeared to Bernadette on seventeen other occasions that year, the last being on the 16th July.

She asked Bernadette for people to come here in procession and since then millions of pilgrims have visited Lourdes to pray, to bathe in and to drink the water which sprang so miraculously at Our Lady’s command.
